I am looking for a high resolution version of the entire image of the Irish brigade in this post, as I plan to get it colourised.
Does anyone have a copy of the image which the close up images of the brigade mambers was taken from, as this image gives so much clearer details of the men?

Many thanks

Paul

Hi Paul,

I have a hi-res version of the photograph of the officers of the Brigade. Is this the one you are looking for?

Neville

I am looking for as much detail of the faces as possible.

Thanks

I have been working on a detailed work on both Transvaal Irish Brigades over the past few years in collaboration with Professor McCracken who has kindly written the foreword to the two volume work. My great grandfather, Burgher William Wallace, served in both Blake/MacBride and Lynch's brigades and was wounded at Pieters Hill and later captured in Johannesburg. I am extremely fortunate to be the custodian of his Anglo Boer War medal.

I have expanded the nominal roll of the brigades as originally compiled by Donal to a large extent and it has continued to grow. I have been able to gather a large number of names of the Irish American contingent as well as the details of one of the French volunteers. O'Kelly's name was not on my list and I would be happy to add him.

I wrote a special edition for the online magazine, the "Nongqai" about the five members of the brigades who were awarded their medals. Since the Special Edition, the details of a six recipient of the Anglo Boer War Medal who was a member of the Transvaal Irish Brigade has come to light.
I am not sure if this link is correct. nongqai-my.sharepoint.com/personal/archi...0hp3ucu-NAg&e=cEJGE9

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

I would certainly be interested in getting copies of both books when they are published. Professor McCracken made me aware some time ago that you were writing a book.

Thanks for sending the link, but unfortunately, it isn’t working for me.

I was requesting a high-resolution image of the Irish Brigade, as I was planning to have it colorised. I was prompted to do so after seeing that the same person is currently working on colorising images for you. They previously completed the attached image for me, which depicts the "Bitterenders" of the Irish Brigade at the end of the war. It features my relative, Sergeant Joe Wade, in the bottom right.

After the war, he and two friends—who are also in the image—attempted to return to Ireland but were instead forced to travel to America. Joe Wade then headed to Panama, where he planned to lead Panamanian rebels against Colombian forces in an attempt to achieve independence.

His cousin, Festus J. Wade, was a successful banker in St. Louis and an advisor to several U.S. presidents. He bought Joe Wade a house in St. Louis, where Festus later served as a director of the 1904 World's Fair. Joe Wade was reunited with Major John MacBride at the fair, where there was a Boer War exhibition. According to letters between Maud Gonne and William Butler Yeats, Joe Wade was always at MacBride's side whenever he visited America.

I am keen to visit South Africa to see the battle sites, particularly Balmoral, where Joe Wade was injured.

I wish you the best with your book, as it is important that their story is told. Their bravery inspired many in Ireland in the years that followed.
