He took part in operations in Transvaal in May and June 1900, including actions at Johannesburg and Pretoria. In October 1900 he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the 1st battalion of the King's Own Scottish Borderers, and the following year served in Transvaal. Promoted to lieutenant on 12 May 1902. In World War I, Captain, Bedfordshire Regiment. In 1920, he inherited the title from his brother to become 18th Lord St John, and lived at Melchbourne Park. A member of the Electoral Committee of the Houses of Parliament from 1925 to 1931. He was Deputy Lieutenant and Justice of the Peace for Bedfordshire. In 1911 a 34 year old unmarried carpenter living with his parents and two of his sisters at Malvern Road. In 1921 an unmarried 44 year old carpenter, a ‘boarder’ at 105 Saltram Road, London W.9. with 55 year old widow Mary Ann HAYDON Died 20th November 1925 at Willesden, London. WOODLAND William George 27 Child's Hill Horse Trainer Enlisted Bedford 30th December 1899 as Trooper 3, subsequently 1502 Occupation ‘horse trainer’’ serving Hertfordshire Yeomanry Discharged at McKenzie’s Farm, Maitland, Cape Town at his own request from further service in connection with the war in South Africa 30th November 1900 Queen’s South Africa Medal ~ Johannesburg, Cape Colony, Orange Free State clasps. Born 1872 Childs Hill, City of London, Middlesex son of Mrs W WOODLAND , later of Carrington, Nottingham. In 1891 an 18 year old farmer with his 15 year old brother Herbert, running the farm at Bradman House, Coulsdon, Surrey with a foreman, housekeeper and two stable workers. On 7th July 1897 a 24 year old race horse trainer of Epsom, Surrey, married Minnie WILLIAMSON, a 21 year old spinster at St Augustine’s New Basford, Nottingham. 1904 granted National Hunt Jockey Licence William George WOODLAND, of the Manor House, Headbourne Worthy, Winchester, stud manager died 2nd December 1921.(National Probate Records) Interred St Swithuns, Headbourne Worthy 6th December 1921. WOODS Frank 20 Spain Stock Exchange Clerk Enlisted Bedford 30th December 1899 as Trooper 109, subsequently 1501 Occupation ‘stock exchange clerk’’ Discharged Bedford, on the termination of his engagement 15th June 1901 Queen’s South Africa Medal ~ Johannesburg, Cape Colony, Orange Free State & South Africa 1901 clasps. Born 19th October 1879 at Santander, Spain the son of James Pontifax WOODS (1833 - 1912) a fund holder, & Margaret WOODS nee BELL (1842-1887) of Camillas, Santander, Spain. Born 9th August 1872 at Wymondham, Leicestershire, England.
