When I first started collecting militaria I added some buttons to my collection, nothing special just a few British regiments.
I wondered if anyone collects buttons to the period, I would like to start collecting as a subsidary to my medal collection buttons to the South African units.
I realise these are harder to find than British regiments so I am hoping for some advice to whether this might be a good venture.
Any advice on avenue's of purchase would be welcome.
If anyone has any pics to post for reference that would be really helpful.
Thank you as always

Paul :)

I have collected some buttons of units represented in my medal collection, especially ones that are rarely seen (eg Natal Mounted Police, Natal Police). A friend who owns the local militaria shop often bemoans the fact that button collectors seldom, if ever, visit his shop. As a result, he has a large stock of mostly South African buttons. I will tell him of your interest.

Paul,

That's an interesting idea and one few people seem to have followed. At the various medal shows here in the UK there are dealers with boxes of buttons on carboard mounts but, from my few memories of rifling through these, I don't recall too many ones for South African units of the Boer War.

Other than the pre-existing units, do you know if any buttons were manufactured for the new SA units in the Boer War?

Kind regards
David

Hello Paul,
Buttons can be found and were very popular with officers in a few units, here is a Prince of Wales Light Horse.
