Hi Paul,
That is a very nice and colourful card, but I don't think there was much good in him during the Boer War, he had been promoted way beyond his capability, good field officer, bad general!

It seems that there were many in the British high command who were out of their depth during the early stages of the Boer War, since they seriously misjudged their enemy. Perhaps some (?many) of Buller's troops and the British public forgave him his errors of judgement, because he prevailed in the end. Had the 2nd Boer War ended like the 1st with another Majuba, Buller would not have been able to save his reputation, unless he had a glorious death on a battlefield.
