Messrs Paton, Calvert, and Co. (The “Matchless" Metal Polish Company), produced souvenirs in the form of medals. Outfitters, Simpson & Co, with outlets in both Penzance and Durban, issued similar souvenirs, which were made of cardboard covered with white metal.

Messrs Paton, Calvert & Co., received praise for their support for Reservists (see below).

Liverpool Daily Post, 20th January 1900

A LIVERPOOL RESERVIST FOR THE FRONT.
AN EMPLOYER’S GENEROSITY.

Within ten days of the expiry of his term as a Reservist. Mr George F. NUGENT, of this city, has been called to rejoin the colours. Late of the 20th Hussars, he will on Monday join the 13th Hussars at Hounslow, and will shortly leave with them for the front. After three years’ service with the 20th, Mr NUGENT passed as roughrider and drill instructor, and subsequently gained a number of regimental prizes for shooting, tent-pegging, &c. For several years he has been in the employ of Messrs Paton, Calvert, and Co. (The “Matchless" Metal Polish Company), who have thought so highly of his services as to promise to retain his place until his return, and to allow his wife half salary during his absence. This is an example of generosity not often equalled.

.The Showman, 1st December 1900

The medal above was also available from Simpson's Durban shop. An example of the latter souvenir can be seen here: Simpson & Co., Outfitters, Durban

.The Cornishman, 13th December 1900 and 21st December 1899

The past is not dead. In fact, it's not even past.

Continuing with the “pompom” theme …..

Tin harmonica in the form of a Vickers Sons & Maxim 1-pdr shell, with original box: "THE LATEST IN MOUTH ORGANS / M. HOHNER'S / 'POM-POM' / NOVELTY WAR SOUVENIR / Registered Patent applied for / Exact Model of the famous 1pr. Shell used in the Boer War 1899-1901".
On base of harmonica: "Made in Germany". Harmonica 90mm high; box 94mm high.

The second image shows the harmonica next to an actual VSM 1-pdr shell.

Banbury Beacon, 15th February 1902

The War and Trade Novelties.
It is curious, writes a correspondent, that manufacturers, both at home and abroad, continue to turn to the South African campaign for inspiration in the designing of new patterns. For example, a mouth organ of German manufacture has a sounding-bell in the shape of a “pom-pom”. Before the war the shipments made to South Africa of these facile instruments were considerable, and the opinion of the makers appears to be that the Cape colonists will welcome the opportunity of securing so grim a souvenir in this attractive form.
