Much less known than the Queen Victoria 1900 chocolate box or Queen Victoria's scarves are the 5500 pipes presented by Queen Alexandra to the Regiments serving in South Africa with which she was associated in 1902.

I have just found an excellent article on these pipes, from which the photo below, is taken and post the link for interest.

The pipe pictured was presented to Colour Sergeant P. R. Knight, 3rd Battalion Scottish Rifles.

Would love to find one of these pipes......

When I get home I will have to look at the pipes that I have.....

I would also like to find one of these pins...... I understand that they were given by Queen Alexandra to the Wife and Daughter of Lord Roberts and the wives of some of the other senior officers.....

I do not have one just a picture.....

Thank you for a very interesting post. I had not heard of these pipes, and I also did not know that there is a journal devoted to the study of pipes. This is a very educational forum! I expect that the pipes were used, wore out and were discarded. Unlike chocolate tins, they could not be used to store treasures, so few will have survived.

Regards
Brett

I wonder how many were thrown out when relatives failed to realise what they actually were and just thought it was dad's old pipe.

Many thanks for posting, Justin, fascinating.

Berenice,

I'm sure this has been the fate of many a treasure over the years :(

I only have two pipes and a money box relating to the Boer War.

The first pipe is a POW carved pipe, and the second is a Meerschaum pipe of an HMS Powerful sailor.

The reason I included the money box is because it still has its pipe, and they usually go missing over time.

Wombat,
James.
