David

As if, no medals in Tenerife, but lots of other good stuff, handbags, shoes, all I got was a garlic chopper

Looking through this current catalogue, for me, just highlights how many broken or other issues with medals that there are out there.

A single Elandslaagte bar casualty QSA with a missing WW1 entitlement went for £600 + Com yesterday, makes you wonder!!

Hi all

Just a small point, which I am sure will sort itself out, but I was successful with three lots at this auction, but lot 176 had this footnote:

Footnote
3016 Private J. H. Jacques, 1st Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment, was wounded in Natal, 22 February 1900. Jacques was one of 14 men of the regiment wounded in action on that day at Hedge Hill, on the north bank of the Tugela River.

So, I emailed the museum, as you do, and received this:

War Record of the York and Lancaster Regiment (1st Battalion) 1900 – 1902 by A.H.C. Kearsey :
- Page 243, Private J.H. Jacques Wounded 22nd January 1900
- Page 18 -20 details the event in which he was wounded and the days before and after. Pte. Jacques was wounded along with seven others in very severe fighting in the battle of Spionkop.
- There is also a medal roll on the last few pages and J.H. Jacques has the following medals:
o Cape Colony
o Transvaal
o Tugela Heights
o Relief of Ladysmith
o Laing’s Nek
o The only medal he did not receive was the Orange Free State

This book can be found in our search room and you are welcome to come in a view it.
We also hold the Regimental Histories, by Col. H.C. Wylly, in our search room and these provide details of where the battalions were, what they were up to and when. Volume one covers the Boer War and also includes a map relating to the various places they were fighting.

Ancestry states the 22nd Feb, he is also entitled to the 1901 bar but no KSA, roll just states discharged.

Obviously the person at the museum is not bar and battle savvy, but we know what they mean:-)

If anyone has this book, could they check it out please?

Interesting eh?

Doug.

Hi
I was very interested in one lot in particular, but I was the underbidder with a Hammer price more than 4 times the lower estimate!
I did get 2 out of 4 of my other bids
