Meurig

Thank you for that information. I had heard that nurses received "officially renamed" QSA's, but it had not occurred to me that this practice applied to medals from other campaigns as well.

I was indeed particularly interested in one man on the list - Sgt Faddy of the NMP. He was an interesting man and I built up a file on him with Meurig's help.

If the intended recipients of the medals listed had not claimed them by the 1930's, it is most likely that they never went into circulation with the original naming. Perhaps a canvass of a medal forum and a Zulu War forum may show otherwise.

Brett,

I wonder that if the medals were returned to South Africa then it just might be possible that they remained out of sight for many years and some may have later been "taken" by somebody and perhaps made it into circulation. Who knows? I remember seeing several unclaimed post WWII medals in a safe during my national service and it was clear they had been there for many years. If I had been so inclined I could have helped myself to a few and nobody would have been any the wiser.

Cheers,

Mark

That is indeed a possibility. 'Leakages' of medals from South African military stores have been occasionally documented and more frequently suspected. In this particular instance, one is dealing with the 1930's and possibly a bit later, a time when ethics and moral values were still valued in local society, unlike the situation that has prevailed in more recent times.
