George,

Having been made up and named, I think they were eventually scrapped and the silver reused. The fact that late issues were named in a later style suggests they were not retailed for long into the 1910s.

This issue mainly affects units raised for the War. Looking at the Town Guard rolls, 12,808 medals are noted as issued. 5,381 were either returned or not prepared, the majority the former.

George...…

Of course there are a number that were officially renamed after having the old name removed to replace medals lost during W.W.1 ……

A number of King's and Queen's South Africa War Medals and clasps for Non-Commissioned Officers and men who served in various Imperial and Irregular Corps, and Canadian Contingents, in South Africa, are still awaiting claimants, whose addresses cannot be ascertained.

Many letters have been returned by the Postal Authorities as unclaimed.

Applications for these decorations should be addressed to the Deputy Director of Ordnance Stores, (Medal Branch), Royal Arsenal, Woolwich, accompanied by discharge certificates and full particulars of service with other Corps.
