1899 - Diary of the siege of Mafeking by Edward Ross

Friday, 29 December

The staff state that the news received yesterday is from a reliable source. We trust it is, as up to the present all the yarns they have given us about relief have proved fables.

Thank goodness it has turned out a fine morning, we can have an opportunity of drying things.

Burne of the Town Guard Reserve removed to hospital this afternoon, supposed to be something wrong with his liver but really think it is a case of jumps.

Two shells at 8.30, one big one in Lippman’s store, very narrow escape for him, and one x 2-pounder into Whiteley Walker’s doing very considerable damage.
