Thank you for posting another very unusual QSA, De Sconde was probably the only man in the southern relief column who was already dead when he arrived in Mafeking on 17/5/1900.

Hopefully to add to the record of the southern relief force someone will now post a medal of an infantryman in the Fusilier detachment.

Regards
Brett

5086 Private George Haylock, a twenty year old milkman, from Cambridge, joined the Royal Welsh Fusiliers on the 10th of July 1896, having already served in their 2nd Battalion, he was, on the 6th of January 1899, posted to the 1st Battalion, having seen his boss, Lieutenant Colonel Charles Thorold, killed on the wretched Tugela, on the 24th of February 1900, I dare say, Mafeking, must have seemed a hell of a long way away.

It is very important to remember those Fusiliers from Barton's "Union" Brigade, actually made it all the way to Mafeking by a series of appalling forced marches, whilst Colonel Mahon had, very thoughtfully, provided a cart, for "weary" fusiliers, it could not convey the whole of the composite company at the same point in time.

Do you have De Sconde's probate file?

If not let me know and I'll send it to you.
