In North Sunderland Cemetery. Not to be confused with Sunderland in County Durham, North Sunderland is a village near the Northumberland coast, sort of between Berwick and Alnwick.
Sunderland literally means, 'Southern land' and refers to its placement to Bamburgh. The word 'North' was added to avoid confusion with Sunderland in Wearside. www.farne.co.uk/north_sunderland_and_seahouses..html

My copy of Smith's "Australia's Yeomanry Scouts" tells us that "22 Sgt. James D Wilson, IYS, Kimberley LH to 30 Apr 00, WiA, Lindley 28 Jun 00, Died of Wounds, 15 Jul, 1900". Clasps DofL, CC, OFS. DJB's roll says "..with IYS from 10 May 00 and clasps DofK and OFS".
Regards
IL.

Thank you for showing another interesting headstone. What a terrible start to the 20th Century this family experienced! I wonder if there was anyone left in that lineage to remember that tragic period.
Regards
Brett

Brett, wandering round some of the churchyards along the Northumbrian coastline, it was sobering how often you'd see it mentioned on headstones that someone had drowned, whether lost from a fishing boat, drowned when a ship foundered, or lifeboat crew lost while trying to rescue others. Fathers and sons would often work on the same fishing boat if they owned it and all could be lost if it went down.
Joining the army might have been seen as a safer option by some men, or at least as a way of escaping from a lifetime of fishing.
