Although it's not clear in the first photograph, the name of Lieutenant C.R. Davies has been added as the fourth name from the top. An addition to the board had to be made at the bottom to add a further two names. Personally, I think this is one of the most interesting ABW memorials I've seen so far and I'd like to thank The King's School for allowing me to take the photos, especially as I'd turned up on spec.

What is "I.M.R.", F.H. Claxton's unit?

I think it will be Imperial Military Railways.

He was a civilian linesman who died of disease. This may explain why he appears to be absent from the medal rolls.

Very nice memorial Berenice, and fragile one too, thankfully it is in good shape.

Claxton: being a civilian fitter in the IMR shouldn't disbar you from a QSA and an entry in the medal rolls.

The problem is the spelling of the surname - this man is FH Clayton of the Natal Vol Ambulance Corps, Railway Pioneer Rgt and the IMR. He appears as such on the medal rolls for all three units, his next of kin is named as Mrs E Clayton, Blackpool.

No idea why SAFF call him "Claxton", probably a clerical error. Why the school made such a mistake, unless the 'x' on the panel is some fancy script 'y' is anyone's guess.

He has two death dates in SAFF - 31-12-1901 and 09-01-1902. The Times of 25-02-1902 helpfully publishes a correction confirming 09-01-1902 as the date of death.

But on the IMR roll he is showing as resigning as 01-04-1901 - did he rejoin the IMR?

The IMR don't appear to have been allowed date clasps, there is only one Extra Clasp roll page for the IMR, and that is to issue a single Transvaal claps to an officer attached. So we never know his true status.

The Register has the correct record for FH Clayton.
