How amazing! It is a small world for people with our interests! Thank you for sharing your Melville display with me. If you do not already have them, I can have copied for you papers in the Maritzburg Archives relating to Melville's death. Such papers can occasionally carry interesting information. I suspect that he was the son of Hugh Melville, a well-known farmer from the Port Shepstone district. 'Melville' is the name given to one of the residential/resort towns on the coast north of Port Shepstone.

Brett

This is the reason I fear for the future of the BMR Memorial in the Norwegian Settler's Cemetery in Port Shepstone. The report is from Durban's 'The Independent on Saturday' published today (23 April 2016).

Hello Brett,
How ironic, given your post here, very sad news indeed, although, I have to say that, in all honesty, I am not really surprised.

The BMR Memorial is fortunately situated in the Norwegian Cemetery, where it is well cared for. What the future holds for it is very uncertain, with the vandalising of the one in Uitenhage (and other such events) perhaps a sign of what lies ahead.

I've only just come across your photo of Hulley's QSA which caught my eye as the Wagon Hill/Caesar's Camp battle is a particuar interest of mine. From accounts I have read the BMR picket on Caesar's Camp was the first one fired upon by the Boers and Hulley, along with his comrades Fox, Gold and Lawson, were the first British casualties of the battle.

I cannot now remember if I have already posted the National Army Museum item shown below. I would like to have it
hanging on a wall in my home!
Regards
Brett

PS Sorry! The item cannot be posted. I will try to find a link that might work.
