Very beautiful in it's construction, the attention to detail, a fitting memorial, I like it very much and of course, given the way things are, nice to see it remaining in very good condition all these years later.

FURTHER TO THE MEMORIAL TO THE 18Th HUSSARS AT LADYSMITH

IL's small tribute to the Officers and Men of the 18th Hussars - and especially to 4748 Pte. T. Roach of B Squadron,.



The Regiment commenced the campaign with a disaster (thanks to the actions of its Colonel) - and Pte.T.Roach was not captured; like many of his Squadron in the aftermath of the Talana battle. The Regiment was present during the retreat to Ladysmith and was prominent in the defence of that town. Later the Regiment was employed with considerable success in the Transvaal and ORC. According to Vol.4 of 'The History of British Cavalry' by the Marquess of Anglesey, in late 10/00 it became policy to make the Cavalry nearly indistinguishable from the M.I. in the manner of armament - and the 18H was probably the first to replace carbines with the standard infantry rifle.
During operations around Dulstroom (when the Regiment came under the command of General Bindon Blood, 4748 Pte. T.Roach was involved in a skirmish with the enemy on 18/4/1901. Two of his comrades were killed and Pte. Roach was one of four wounded in the exchange of fire.

Rolls and David's Talana book states died of disease but on the memorial it shows killed or wounded in action.
Is this a common mistake, opinions welcomed please.

Oakes is shown in 'In Memoriam' and 'The 18th Hussars in South Africa' as having died of enteric in Ladysmith 15/2/1900. He served in 'A' squadron and is buried at Intombi Cemetery. No grave marker survives.
