Perhaps the opportunity to place a memorial by the Hardy Monument came up after the initial idea of a drinking fountain.

The Hardy Monument was erected in 1844 in memory of Vice Admiral Sir Thomas Hardy (and not Thomas Hardy, the writer), a commander at the Battle of Trafalgar; he lived at the nearby village of Portesham. It was designed to resemble a spyglass, and was also intended to be a landmark for shipping. It stands 72 feet high, on Black Down, which is itself 794 feet above sea level.

If you sit on the memorial seat, this is what you'll see....

Weymouth, and Weymouth Bay beyond,


and the Isle of Portland. Part of Chesil Beach can be seen on the right.


I think the right choices in both form and site of a memorial were taken.
