Earlier today on the thread 'The Devils Own at Talana' I posted a picture of the medals of Colour-Sergeant John Gage of the 2nd Royal Dublin Fusiliers. There has been more on this site about this man, but I have been unable to find the relevant thread(s).

The photograph below was given to me and it shows the grave in the Fort Napier Cemetery of his brother, Colour-Sergeant J C V Gage, 2nd RDF, who died of wounds received during the Battle of Colenso, and John Gage, who, after leaving the RDF, had a distinguished career in the Natal Mounted Rifles.

The inscriptions are as follows:

Sacred to the Memory of
Cr Sergt J C V Gage
2nd Bn Royal Dublin Fusiliers
Died of Wounds received at Colenso
20th December 1899

Also his brother
Major J E F Gage DCM
Late 2nd Bn Royal Dublin Fusiliers
and Natal Mounted Rifles
Died at Maritzburg 1st July 1933
Aged 64 years

Excellent, thanks Brett. I did wonder if they were brothers but I could not find any papers on-line.

I am pleased that you found the post interesting. The present owner of John Gage's medals has many other items relevant to him, while there is a Gage descendant in Australia who has collected a large number of documents on the family's history.

Very nice to see, Brett, one wonders if John Gage, Thomas Bracken and Hugh Gibney actually knew each other, in particular, after the engagement on the 20th of October 1899.

I would never presume to blame the site for my inability to use it effectively! I am still trying to adapt to life in the 21st Century. I prefer the good old days, which is why I spend most of my alert moments involved with matters that happened in the 19th Century.

In my collecting of medals to the mounted soldiers of the Colony of Natal, I have often wondered if the comradeship of the men on active service lasted long afterwards. Veterans of the Natal Mounted Police and Natal Police formed an Association that flourished long after their units had ceased to exist.
