No, It was a planned visit. I'd gone there on a Saturday afternoon last month, hoping that it might be open to visitors. It wasn't, so I went back the next morning as there was a service then.

I was in Beaumaris for a couple of hours, a few years ago, as part of a coach tour around Anglesey. Too short a time to really explore the town, so that's somewhere to go when I next visit Anglesey.

It is remarkable how your original post that first mentioned Lieutenant McCorquodale has focussed on the tragic story of this young man, who died with so many others on Spioenkop. As with the other casualties, his death was memorialised on the battlefield and, in his case specifically by his own communities in Wales and England. Now, thanks to you, he has been remembered again on this forum by people in the UK, Australia, Canada and South Africa.
Regards
Brett

"DISABLED AND CAST OFF"

The late Lieutenant Hugh Stewart McCorquodale, who was killed at Spion Kop on January 24th, 1900, by his will bequeathed to his executor a sum of money to be divided between such lawful charities as his executors should think fit. Out of this sum they have handed over to the trustees of Lloyd's Patriotic Fund £1,050, to be invested by them and the interest applied for the benefit of "two men disabled in the present campaign in South Africa and discharged the service in consequence."

South Wales Echo, Thursday 11th October 1900
