Very good find, Berenice.

Interesting to see the contemporary reporting of the fighting as "Spion Kop". Slater was killed on an adjacent hill, Tabanyama four days before the maelstrom on Spion Kop.

He is not in Soldier's Effects, but may be John William married June Qrtr 1899 Burnley District which includes Brierfield.

I'll check the marriage announcements in the Burnley Express, but it's surely unlikely that a weaver's wedding would be included, so I think 'John William' is our best bet.
