I visited Barnard Castle Co.Durham yesterday and while there I located the garden of remembrance for the town
A few photographs of the Boer war memorial.
The Boer War Memorial is situated in upper Galgate within a Garden of Remembrance. The square base and plinth is built from Sandstone and is surmounted by a red granite boulder. The Memorial bears a brass plaque which, over time, has been relocated to the opposite side following the creation of the Garden of Remembrance.

The inscription reads:-

PRO PATRIA
In memory of the Officers, NCOs and men of the 3RD (Militia) Batt the Durham Light Infantry, The Imperial Yeomanry and local volunteers attached to the line regiments who died in South Africa during the Boer War. 1899 – 1902

Well 2 years later and a trip out to Barnard Castle today for a look round the antique shops.
As I walked past the Memorial which I think is one of the most unimaginative I have seen, I decided to look in at St.Mary's Church to see if there was any commemoration to the D.L.I.
I was pleased to find the Church open to visitors and then found a memorial plaque to the D.L.I. who served in the South African war.
The plaque is bronze with a dark marble surround so apologies for the poor images.

The granite boulder is presumably meant to be symbolic of something.

It looks like they had three different options for the memorial and decided to have a bit of all three.
