Fred,
Maj Childe was killed by a shell on the summit of Bastion Hill, and there is a memorial on the spot, GPS -28.63345, 29.45905.
His body was carried down to the valley below by stretcher bearers, and he was buried that night near the SALH camp.
The grave was on what is now the farm of Fanie Mentz, and I believe it to be at approx. GPS -28.66435, 29.39829.
At some later date, likely the 1960s or 1970s, his body was disinterred and he was re-buried at Rangeworthy Military cemetery, GPS -28.65006, 29.46849.
I have visited the area many times, but I was after any information about who was at his burial, and the exact spot of his original burial. The local farmers have shown me what appears to be his original grave, which really is of interest to me because it locates the SALH camp. A forum member has sent me a pixelated photo of his original grave and wooden cross, but wants me to pay for seeing the high resolution photo, which is not my style, so I was seeking another copy of the photo, or other photos, or descriptions of the burial (I have some descriptions already).
All of this was a tiny detail in a book I have been writing.
Thanks so much for your interest, do add anything you can!
Rob

Hello Rob, I only just saw your message now. I will help you find the original burial site. I am intrigued to find any of the gravestone that was broken up. I won't ask any money for this as I regard it as irretrievable history that we must try to preserve. Contact me on +27828083971 whatsapp if I don't respond quick enough. Kind regards,

Fred

I now have maps to corroborate where I found what I thought was the grave, but it contained the broken up headstone. It is not at the co-ords you gave me. I will also look for my original report written to the Boer War Museum in which I put the picture of it. Can we meet up and go to the place?
