...."The announcement has reached Southport of the death, at Ladysmith, on January 6th, of Mr. Ernest Mocatta, son of General Mocatta, and nephew of the late Archdeacon and Mrs. Clarke, of Southport. The Misses Clarke, Hawkshead-street, are cousins, as also are the Rev. Henry Mocatta, principal Clive House School, and Mr. Edward Mocatta, of Bickerton-road, Birkdale. The deceased spent some of his early years in Southport. He went out to South Africa three years ago, and on the outbreak last October joined the Imperial Light Horse. He was killed in the attack on Ladysmith on January 6th."

Accompanying write-up as follows:

"He was the youngest son of Daniel and Georgina Mocatta. Ernest had been a member of the Royal Chester Rowing Club and also secretary of the Chester Hockey Club. Ernest had been living in Durban for nearly 4 years and was in civil employment. When Colonel Scott Chisholme raised the Imperial Light Horse, Ernest joined the regiment as a trooper at Pietermaritzburg. Shortly after the regiment went to Ladysmith where it took a prominent part in all the fighting. At the Battle of Elandslaagte, Ernest was in the front fighting line and gained his first experience of being under fire. There was severe fighting on the 6th January 1900 and the Imperial Light Horse took the brunt of the first fierce attack, losing very heavily both in officers and men. Ernest was killed in action on Wagon Hill, Ladysmith, South Africa, aged 27 yrs. A memorial service for him was held at St Marys-without-the-Walls, Handbridge, Chester. He is commemorated here but is buried at Ladysmith Cemetery, South Africa."
