SERIOUS MISHAP TO THE 1ST SUFFOLKS.
.
55 KILLED AND WOUNDED.
.
MANY MEN MISSING.
....The following telegrams have been received at the War Office from the General Commanding at Cape Town:—
"Cape Town, Jan. 6.......
...."French reports, January 6:—'I regret to report that serious accident has happened to the 1st Suffolk Regiment. From news just come to hand from them, I gather that, with the authority and with the knowledge of French, four, companies of the 1st Suffolk advanced by night against low hill, one mile from their camp. They attacked at dawn. Lieutenant-Colonel Watson, commanding, gave orders to charge. He was at once wounded. Orders for retirement were given, it is said by the enemy. Three-quarters of the force retreated to camp. Remainder held their ground till, overpowered by greater numbers, they surrendered. Seventy taken prisoners, including seven officers."....The 1st Suffolks were ordered to South Africa immediately after the disaster at Nicholson's Nek, near Ladysmith. It had been for some time stationed at Dover Citadel, having taken up quarters there after returning from Malta, whither the battalion was despatched during the operations in the Soudan. The reserves, it w as stated at the time, responded almost to a man, and the battalion was quite at full strength when it sailed on board the Scot. The battalion has been mainly engaged on the line of communication. In the early part of last week several companies were engaged in the operations around Colesberg, and in the attempt to regain the wrecked provision train. The career of Colonel Watson, the commanding officer, who is reported killed, has been marked by experience in several expeditions, notably the Bechuanaland expedition, under Sir Charles Warren, in 1884-5, in which he served as Brigade-Major, and was mentioned in despatches. He was in the Hazara Expedition in 1888, and acted as Brigade-Major to the first column, being again mentioned in despatches, and obtaining the medal, with clasp. His next service was with the Chitral Relief Force, in 1895, in which he was Road Commandant on the lines of communication; here again he obtained a medal and clasp.

.. ....According to the "Daily Mail," "four companies, of the Suffolks occupied a hill on the right flank of the enemy before daybreak. Two companies charged and gained the height, but someone shouted 'Retire.' It is supposed he was a Dutchman. The men fell back, losing heavily. The prisoners number about seventy of all ranks. Our artillery opened a heavy fire of shell on the Boer kopjes, and their ambulance was seen to be very busy. It is supposed that the Boers sustained heavy loss." ....The Central News Rensburg correspondent, telegraphing at 9 p.m. on Saturday, says:—"Four companies of the 1st Suffolk Regiment made an unsuccessful attack upon the Boer position near their camp this morning. Col. Watson, of the Suffolks, planned the attack, and asked and obtained of General French permission to carry it out. The Boer position which it was intended to take was upon some kopjes two miles to the north-east of Colesberg, and one mile from the Suffolks' camp. Four companies left during the night, and arrived before the position just before daybreak. The enemy opened fire as the Suffolks were commencing the final advance. Col. Watson ordered a charge, and directly afterwards he fell wounded. Owing to a misunderstanding, three companies retired, while the fourth remained. After fighting some time, surrounded by a considerable force of the enemy, they were compelled to surrender."

RECEPTION OF THE NEWS IN SUFFOLK.
....The news of the disaster to the 1st Battalion Suffolk Regiment created the most painful impression in Suffolk. It has brought the war more home to us than anything else, for quite five-sixths of the men belong to the county. Lieut. Cecil Arbuthnot White, one of the officers killed, was a son of Mr. R. Holmes White, of Boulge Hall, Woodbridge. The deceased officer was considerably over six feet high. Major V. W. H. Graham, who was severely wounded, was well known as a former adjutant of the 2nd V.B.S.R. Three or four of the men killed, and several of the wounded and missing, belong to Ipswich. We shall be pleased to assist the widows of those killed in making the necessary steps to obtain the assistance of the several funds opened for such cases. All the above reports from The Ipswich Journal, Saturday 13th January 1900

THE DISASTER TO THE SUFFOLKS.
....Corporal W. Duell, of G Company, 1st Suffolk Regiment, has sent the following graphic account of the disaster to his regiment to Mr. W. T. Nice, of Rosebery Road. New Catton:—"
Naauwpoort Camp, January 11th.......
...."No doubt you will have heard or read of our terrible disaster long before you receive this. I will tell you just how it occurred. On Boxing Day we left this camp for Arundel to join General French's brigade. We stayed there a few days, and the enemy continued to snipe at us. On the 30th we were to have made an attack on them, but they were too smart for us. They left during the night, so directly after church on Sunday we struck camp and moved off to Rensburg where we encamped for the night, our cavalry and artillery having driven them from their position. We moved out on Monday (New Year's Day) with 150 rounds of ammunition and three days' rations in our haversacks, and our great coats, blankets, and waterproof sheets on the transport. Our camp we left standing. Tuesday was a day of rest. We only fired on their scouts whenever an opportunity occurred, and they did they same. On Wednesday we found them trying to gain a kopje on our left, when Major Graham did a splendid move with his company and drove them from it, making them cross our front, so they were under a terrific cross fire from us. Then to finish it up, the cavalry charged them on both flanks, which entirely routed them. Our causualties were three killed and seven wounded. My own regiment out of that had two killed and three wounded. On Friday all was quiet. Saturday, 6th, we formed up at 12.30 a.m. and marched on towards Pink Hill. Our colonel gave the order, 'Officers to the front.' It was barely done when a solitary shot passed over us. One man of H company, seeing the bush where it came from, charged, with the result of a man ending his life on the end of a bayonet. That same man was the first of us to fall. We went a few yards further, when a terrible fire was poured on us like hailstorms. Then were to be seen men falling on all sides, some never to rise again. Our men wavered at first, but recovered, and three times did they charge that position, and were repulsed. The colonel, finding it impossible to take, gave the command, 'Retire, men, and save yourselves.' He was wounded, and as soon as he issued his command another bullet struck him in the head, and he spoke no more. However we came out of that I do not know, and don't suppose I ever shall, but, thank God, Arthur and I both came out without a scratch. When we called our roll, we found that the killed were 4 officers and 28 rank and file, the wounded and taken prisoners 104. We only had one wounded man handed over to us, and he is not expected to live, having received eight bullet wounds. Owing to our severe loss we have had to come back, one half battalion at Arundel, the remainder here for duty. It is a plain thing that we shall see no more fighting; as we have no officers. There were nine amongst the prisoners. The Boers are the most uncultivated lot of men I ever met. We heard that they took everything away from our dead and prisoners, even stripping Colonel Watson of his clothing, and cutting his fingers off to get his rings. To-day we had bread and meat served out to us. and were able to have a decent wash, that is the first this year....." P.S.—We don't know their proper losses, but on Wednesday they had to send out seven ambulances to fetch in their wounded, and it took some time to bury their dead on Saturday. We have no idea, but it must have been awful. We were only fifteen yards away when they opened fire." ....The Suffolks, who have been recruiting at Port Elizabeth have, it is reported, been sent to De Aar, where they will be re-officered, and then proceed to the front. The Suffolks are more than delighted at the prospect of again fighting the Boers. They feel that they have endured undeserved blame for the Colesberg disaster, and are most anxious to retrieve themselves. The Ipswich Journal, Saturday 10th February 1900

Hi Berenice,
Great pics of the monument and a good go-to reference point for the fallen of Suffolk and the action at Rensburg. Many thanks.

The Ipswich War Memorial website refers to this memorial as the East Suffolk Soldiers Memorial, the reason being that there's another Suffolk Soldiers Memorial in Bury St Edmunds. The Bury memorial omits some names that are on the Ipswich memorial, and adds others. So neither can be called the memorial for the county despite the name they both have.

I've visited and posted on the forum the memorial at Bury St. Edmunds. Now I know to use both as a source of info.
Thanks. |
