Regarding the Royal Warwickshire Regiment memorial cottage homes above, the auction details from 1961 reveal the following: "Each cottage comprises: entrance hall, two reception rooms (respectively 11ft, plus bay by 10ft 10in. and 10ft, 11in. by 9ft 9in.), kitchen, three good size bedrooms (11ft by 10ft 10in., 10ft, 10in. by 9ft 8in. and 8ft 8in., by 7ft 9in.). Brick built outside store and w.c. Useful garden ground and ample space for two or more garages. Main electricity connected. Own septic tank drainage. Water supplied by the War Department."

These memorial cottage homes may also have been one of the only such properties to have been the subject of an eviction.

In the 1930s, it appears that ex-serviceman Bert Collins and his wife were made to leave one of the cottage homes following continual complaints by the occupants of the neighbouring memorial cottage home. This seems to have come to a head when Mrs Collins "emptied the contents of her drain in the next door neighbour's fowlpen" and a few days later when, in the middle of the night, Mr and Mrs Collins "called on the neighbours to come out and fight". Having been given notice to leave by the Regimental Association, men from the depot were then unwilling to eject this ex-serviceman from his home. The matter then proceeded to the magistrates.

Having heard the case, the magistrates found that Mr Collins had been "treated with all the consideration that is due to a man in his position, but he has to abide by certain rules and regulations which, apparently, he has again and again absolutely disregarded." Collins and his wife were ordered to leave their home.

Not sure if this may have been a case of PTSD, or just neighbours not liking one another.

Some good news regarding the demolished KOYLI memorial cottage homes at Batley.

Having 'pestered' Fox's Biscuits, they have agreed to erect a plaque on site in recognition of the former memorial cottage homes and the injured soldiers and their families who previously occupied them. I have put Fox's in touch with the regimental association to hopefully agree/arrange a future unveiling ceremony.

Not much, but at least it's a positive result. (When the plaque goes up, I intend 'celebrating' by consuming a dark chocolate round!)

Slower progress on the former Oxfordshire Light Infantry Cottage Homes at Cowley. The chair of the City Council's Planning Committee has offered to contact the landowner to ask if they would be willing to have a plaque on the new building. However, even if the landowner agrees, there is still the matter of who would pay for a plaque. I think I have to apply through the Oxford Blue Plaque scheme.
