Yes good call David.
It would be a good idea if forum members could share their knowledge of good displays at museums.
My other "local" one DLI has a very good medal room, must pay another visit there soon.

Paul :)

I remember buying a guide to military museums in the UK many years ago and highlighting the ones that were reviewed as having good medal collections.

Best wishes
David

Paul,

I have visited the DLI museum a few years ago and remember it has a good medal display. This was in the days prior to digital photography :(

A very good idea! I enjoy seeing displays in museums that I will never visit, which means every regimental and other military museum in the UK and Ireland. There is a lot to look forward to.

I spent most of my life in museums researching fossil mammals. I realised too late that I prefer medals, and so it is rewarding for me to see how other people research and display them.

Brett,

We can't entice you over for some UK-based medalling? I'm sure we could keep you busy!

My only concern about a museum section would be the copyright of the images and whether the museums would need to give permission for the images being used on the site. Being a non-commercial sites makes this easier but some museums are concerned about divulging information on their collections.

Best wishes
David

I understand your concern about the possibility of infringing the copyright of certain museums. However, the logic behind this particular sort of copyright has always escaped me and it is high time that the management of all museums moved with the times. Museums go to a great deal of trouble to encourage visitors, upon whom they are utterly dependent for their existence. Visitors are their best friends and the reason for their being and museum management should not need to be reminded of these facts. As most normal people know, advertising is the key to getting the public interested in anything, and free advertising by personal recommendation is the best kind. To discourage people from photographing displays and using the result to advertise the museum concerned, suitably acknowledged of course, on an Internet forum is not sensible.

Perhaps troublesome curators on this issue should be reminded of their obligations to the general public. Copyright lawyers may have a place in society, but it is not in the public galleries of museums.
