Thank you for posting the photo of Hirst's medal. It is good that you are able to post really significant items on this forum and I look forward to more in future.

I think it was the Boers and men of the TMI and ILI who were the most notable heroes of the Spioenkop battle, because, for the most part, they were amateur soldiers untrained for the horrors of war. In spite of this, they stuck to their posts as gallantly as the professionals on the hill.

Regards
Brett

Hello Brett,
I have to say that I agree with everything here, Henk, also bought the last really nice one that I saw for sale here some thirteen years ago now!
Kind regards Frank

Hi Brett, Frank and others

Would any of you be willing to venture a rough valuation of Hirst's QSA? I don't want to sell, but if I have a figure, I will post something more about Hirst and then ask the "valuation" question again!

Henk

My many medal-buying blunders were climaxed recently when I paid R28000 for a Wagon Hill 'died of wounds' QSA. (In my defence it had not been my intention to pay anything like that amount, but that is another story ......) Several years ago, I paid R10000 for another DOW Ladysmith siege QSA. So, in answer to your question, if I was buying Hirst's medal, I would probably be prepared to pay R18000 - R20000 for it.

I hope this is enough to entice you to tell us "something more about Hirst".

Regards
Brett

Hi Brett and others

Question 1 : How would you adjust the valuation if Hirst's KSA was added to the QSA?
Question 2 : How did this happen?

My theory is that Hirst's tunic jacket with identification card/papers? somehow got mixed up with the effects of an unknown dead ILI man.

That is why, on my medal label, I had the KiA bit in italics.

Hi again

I forgot to mention that Hirst's ILI number is confirmed on his KSA medal roll entry
