The Jubilee Stone. Rudyard Kipling's parents first met at Rudyard Lake and named their son after it.

Berenice,

It would be easy to pass that memorial and not give it a second glance. It is unusual in that it commemorates quite a few events.

I didn't know that about Kipling's forename either.

Many thanks

I wonder if any villagers still congregate at the memorial on 11 November, or indeed on other occasions? It is maintained in good order so someone still cares for it.

Thanks Berenice - another peace memorial to add to the list. Overall, I really like the idea of marking significant events on a stone.

There's also a war memorial (WW1) hall in Rudyard but it's now unused and starting to look pretty derelict. The Jubilee Stone is only 25-30 yards from the only church in Rudyard - Methodist - so I'd say it's definitely used as the village war memorial now.

Enough room on the stone for the next couple of hundred years!

At Christmas, engineers were actually repairing the reservoir's pumps, these control the amount of water that enters the canal, I must say when I drove past today, the water seemed to be flowing rather too well! :(
