Hello all!
The other day while clearing out a shed up here in Argyll, Scotland I found one of these tins and wondered what they were about, glad to see there's a forum where I can read about this stuff.

Sadly there was no original card or tabacco inside the tin, but instead there is an old letter dated 22/5/1899 (so before the war) written in Afrikaans, I suspect it could also partially be in dutch, don't know for certain yet. I haven't managed to work out what the letter says, I have a friend who speaks afrikaans whose going to help translate it once I have all the words written down, it's terribly difficult to read the handwriting. Though I have figured out the heading is 'Groenvallei', presumably that's where the letter was written. Groenvallei on google takes you to a suburb of Capetown, though it seems to mean 'Green valley' so maybe there's more than one green valley in South Africa I don't know. Thought you guys might find it interesting anyway, if anyone wants I can post the translated letter once I figure it out.

I have struggled to upload any of the pictures I have taken, they seem to be too large a size even when cropped so I've made a Google Docs folder link to where you can view the Tin and the Letter if anyone is interested at all

It's a love letter (1,000 kisses etc).
The past is not dead. In fact, it's not even past.
