Free State engine, decorated

In honour of President Kruger, who made a journey through the Orange Free State, this engine, decorated with the flags of the two republics, was kept in Readiness at Viljoen's Drift, to take him to the Free State capital.

A Transvaal engine, Netherland's SA Railway

These engines, spoken of locally as 'Coffee pots' perhaps on account of the three taps near the cab, have been hitherto the only kind used in the Transvaal. They are able to pull very heavy loads for short distances. Tromp (a name honoured in British naval history) is inscribed on this one.

A Free State Commandant

In the Boer forces, it was the custom for each commando to elect their commandant and other officers. Should their selection, however, be found wanting in ability, they ca, after a certain time choose others. This portrait is of Commandant Van Vuren who was in command of the Heilbron burghers all through the war.

British prisoners of war en route for Pretoria

The men on this train were captures at Sanna's Post near Bloemfontein. They appeared to be well treated on the way up, the Boer guards allowing little presents of tobacco, cigarettes etc to be given to them. Conversations with the men were also permitted.

Exterior of a Boer hospital train

These trains were constantly passing and repassing during the war, between Bloemfontein and Pretoria, very often with a great deal of wounded men aboard. At the time this photo was taken, however, the nurses were not so busy as usual, and having discovered a gentlemen lately from Germany, are conversing with him.

Interior of a Boer hospital train

The hospital arrangements of both forces having been criticised a great deal, this picture will doubtless be of interest. The doctor at the back, and the two ladies, are connected with the German Ambulance Corps. The gentleman on the left of the picture, is a Free State doctor. A wounded Boer lies on No 6 bunk.

Another view of the Sanna's Post prisoners

A view taken looking down the train. This was one of the biggest captures made by the Boers. The old burgher in the front, was one of those in charge. The irrepressible 'Thomas' enlivened the proceedings by rendering 'Rule Britannia' and other national songs by the way.
