Gentlemen,
One could suggest that most of the operations to lift the siege of Ladysmith were indeed tragic and a complete waste of life, many of the young men who were killed needless to to say, could and I am sure, would, have gone forward to achieve high office within the army.

Sadly Frank, that is the case. It was a new type of war and Buller expected too much of his totally incompetent Subordinate staff and the price was paid.
