Hi,

I'm looking for information on my grandfather who served in the 1st Battalion Somerset Lt Infantry. After the boar war he served in India.

Unfortunately when he died his house was put up for sale and all his medals and Army memorabilia were stolen. I have a list of madals he was awarded in the 1st WW but non
that were awarded in the south African conflict. Can You Help !

Born 11th Feb. 1882

Enlisted at Portsmouth 30th December 1898 1st Battalion Somerset Lt Infantry .

I would be very grateful for any information you have or where I might look further.

Hi Tony,

And a warm welcome to the forum.
John Moss is shown in the medal rolls for QSA and KSA
WO100/175 shows his QSA entitlement to Cape Colony/Orange Free State and Transvaal clasps.
WO100/323 shows his KSA entitlement to the two date clasps SA01and SA02 in the remarks it shows " to 1st Battalion.

What would happen in a case like this if the stolen medals one day came up for auction? If the family of the original recipient of the medals could prove that they had originally been stolen would they be entitled to have them returned?

If ever they came up for sale I would buy them back!

I would think it very unlikely after all this time there would be any re-course

We live in hope.
