Dear Forum ,
I have been engaged on family research for several years and have recently found 3 photos which purport to show the same person , one Joseph Croton . However , the two individual posed photos are clearly of different persons . The group photo may show both of them but I keen to learn which one is Joseph . Site records show a Joseph Croton was in the Cape Town Highlanders . I would be most grateful if anyone can assist with the full identification of these photos and the regiments they may relate to.
Many thanks
Roger Cox

Good Afternoon Roger......

I enlarged the cap badge on the group photo and it looks like The Queen's West Surrey Regiment.......

The two singles look to me to be Boer War (First One) and The First World War (the Second)......

Roger
I agree with Mike re the dating of the second pic (that numbered 2039). The webbing is Patt 08 and whilst the rifle is clearly a .303" Magazine Lee Enfield as used in the ABW, these rifles as well as other semi-obsolete patterns were used for training purposes in WW1. Regarding the group pic; the helmets APPEAR to be "Wolseley pattern" type; could be a pic taken during WW1 or even on the NWF.
Regards
IL.

Dear Forum ,

Your response has been most helpful . Knowing the cap badge is Queens West Surrey Regiment enables me to delve further . I now suspect that the group photo and soldier in pith helmet may be my grandfather , one Herbert Charles Cox born 1888 in Holton near Wincanton and lived in Willesden .
I received the Boer War photo about 48 hours ago and as it has come from Joseph Croton1s daughter in Canada , It is most likely correct . I understand that when Joseph died in 1949 in Canada he was given a Military Funeral and feted as Canada`s only Boer War Soldier .
I have attached a newspaper article about Joseph .

Many thanks for your help .
Kind regards
Roger Cox

Good Morning Roger......

Glad you have solved some of your mysteries.......

The 7000 Plus Canadian Soldiers who served in the Boer War might have a bit of an argument with the comment "Canada's only Boer War Soldier".......
