Available whilst at the NA Kew and on line.
Bacon, an 18 year old labourer from Worthing joined the 10th Hussars on the 27th of February 1900 at Woolwich, after attesting at Worthing on the 24th of that month.
Interestingly, he spent the his time from the 2nd of August 1900 to the 16th of that month in prison, before being returned to duty!
He spent a further nine days in confinement from the 27th of November, before being locked up again for another twenty eight days from the 7th of December 1900 for being absent and only returned to duty in the new year of 1901!
With actual service in South Africa from the 23rd of February 1901 to the 21st of September 1902, before his subsequent service in India, he received the QSA and four clasps and married at Broadwater in Sussex on the 3rd of August 1908.
He transferred to the Army reserve on the 24th of February 1908 and was discharged on the 23th of February 1912.

He then joined up and served as a Sergeant Major in the First World War so the army must have sorted him out somewhat! He was born in 1886 so he obviously did lie about his age!

He certainly does appear to have lied about his age, he is shown as a 26 year old coal carter on the 1911 census, but, you could join the Cavalry as a boy and I suppose the only main reason to fraudulently enlist was basically purely financial.

I will try to add a photo of Edward Charles in his 10th Hussars cadet uniform. There doesn't seem to be a photo icon to allow me to do this! Thank you for all the information that you have provided.
