Welcome aboard, Janette !
Do you know which unit your grandfather served in? If you do I take a look and see if I have anything on him.

Cheers,

Mark

Hi Mark, thanks for the welcome! His name was Arthur Fenn. I do have copies of his Military Papers which I got from the Bloemfontein Archives. It's his parenst who are a mistery to me. Arthur gave his address as c/o his Mother E Fenn at Kraaipan. There is mention in documents of a Mr Fenn's farm was used to ambush the Boers in the Mafikeng area. That is what I am trying to research. His Father was Simon Thomas Fenn.

Cheers

Janette,

Not sure if this is of any help to you but there was a Simon Thomas Fenn who married an Emma Cowie in Ipswich, Suffolk in Oct 1879. Simon was born Hemington, Suffolk in about 1857 and Emma was born in Levington, Suffolk also in about 1857. A son, named Arthur was born to them in about 1880 in Ipswich, Suffolk. I am unable to locate this family after the 1881 England census so that may well indicate that they were no longer in England. The parents of Simon Thomas Fenn were Richard and Eliza Fenn.

Could you tell us the name of the military unit that Arthur served in during the Boer War?

Cheers,

Mark

Janette,

I've found a record of a Mrs E Fenn (born UK 1857) and a Mr A Fenn (born UK 1879) traveling aboard the Norman from Cape Town, South Africa to Southampton on 1 November 1902. Notice the year of birth and initial match so possible these are the same people as in my previous post.

Mark

PS: Occupation for A. Fenn given as "storekeeper."

Jannette,

There is only one S T Fenn on the QSA medal rolls. Serving in the South Rhodesian Volunteers, his number was 888 and he received the clasps Relief of Mafeking and Rhodesia.

WO100/267 p35 contains his entry.

David
