Hi

I'm researching my 2nd great grandfather - Sergt JA McCullough and his brothers/nephews (Corpl J McCullough, Corpl W McCullough - wounded, JR McCullough and WA McCullough), all of the Natal Carbineers who were involved in the seige of Ladysmith.

If anyone has any information on them, I would be very grateful.

The 1912 history of the Natal Carbineers confirms the information you already have on the McCullough's, who were all besieged in Ladysmith.

If you have not already done so, it would be worth accessing the website of the SA National Archives, specifically the Pietermaritizburg Repository, which lists several documents relating to the men concerned. For example, Joseph and J R both worked for the Post Office; several of the family farmed at Mid Illovo; while J R was divorced in 1910. There are also Death Notices for John Ross (1926) and William Alexander (1960). I did not check the listings in other repositories of the SANA.

A big disadvantage with the SANA is that only descriptions of the document's contents are given on the website and the documents must be copied on site. The service of a local researcher will be required to do the copying.

Hi Brett

Many thanks for the info. I will definitely check it out.
Would you happen to know if service records are available for them? They were all non-commissioned officers, by the looks of things.

The Curator of the Natal Carbineers Museum in Pietermaritzburg is the best person to ask about NC service records. I cannot remember if she is a member of this forum. If she does not respond to this thread, please send me a pm with your e-mail address and I will send you her e-mail address.

Hi Izabel

Thank you for giving that very impressive list. I suspect that it was family pride and loyalty that contributed a great deal to the success of the NC/RNC as a regiment.

Regards
Brett
