Corporal Sanderson is my Great Grandfather and I would be interested in any more information there might be about him. I understand there is a British Cemetery in Wynberg but have no information on any memorial there to these men.

Tony, since your post this has been a strange one and a bit of a mystery for me too as I can't find him on any Medal Roll or Regimental History to the Regiment. I have actually seen this plaque in St Mary's Church in Nottingham but never noticed he was not on my records. Do you have a regimental number for your relative? A RHR soldier being in a volunteer company should have a four digit number usually beginning with a number seven. Mel.

Mel, thanks v much for your response. Regrettably I don't have a regimental number. All I was told by my late parents is that he died of disease in the Boer War. Born Nottingham 23/03/1874. He left a wife and three sons aged under 8. His wife never remarried. My side of the family stemmed from the oldest son, Arthur Ashwell, my maternal grandfather. The other two sons never married and as far as I am aware had no offspring. On the eldest of his 3 son's marriage certificate circa 1917 he is shown as Corporal Derby Yeomanry ( decd). I visited the military desk at Kew a few years ago and a researcher there found a record of his name in a book sourced to the St Mays church memorial ( the same reference that QSAMike has given in the next post?). I then found a photo of the plaque on the Internet. Until then I did not know when he died or exactly where. My mothers side of the family had quite a long association with Nottingham and I am a little surprised the existence of the memorial, if known, was never mentioned. I saw it last year. It's a lovely thing and the church is a wonderful place too.
Is it possible that the Casualty Details, OfficiL Casualty Roll and Casualty Source information referred to in QSAMIKE's post will throw further light on this?
Incidentally, Arthur Ashwell joined the RFC in 1916 and got his Wings. As a mere Seargsnt Pilot I was told he trained pilots but was not allowed to fly in combat. From 1940 to 1945 he was at Standerton near J'Burg flight training and I do wonder if he knew his father died in Wynberg whether he got the chance to visit the place which also looks beautiful in pictures I have seen.

Once again I am most grateful for your help.
I am pleased that this specialised Boer War site has materialised as there seemed a dearth of info sources on the Internet previously.
If you do come across any more info I would be very interested to hear.
Best
Tony

Thank you very much for this. Most grateful.
Not sure what 'FMP' is .
Is the official casualty roll available to see?
"The South African Field Force. J B Hayward and Sons" - what / who are these exactly?
It would be interesting to know whether he got further than Cape Town before succumbing to disease.
I guess a lot more research would needed to find to which unit this volunteer was seconded and whether they saw any action., if indeed the information is there. As far as I know the number of Robin Hood Riflers who joined the campaign was quite small. but then I expect that would apply to many other volunteers from Yeomanry units.
Thanks again and best wishes
Tony

Hi Tony.....

Not sure what 'FMP' is .

Sorry FMP is an online service for genealogists, Find-My-Past....... Should have mentioned that earlier....... So used into using FMP......

"The South African Field Force. J B Hayward and Sons" - what / who are these exactly?

This is a published book giving all the casualties of the SAFF.......

This book is a listing of all of the grave sites etc. IN MEMORIAM, Roll of Honour Imperial Forces, Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902, by Steve Watt, University of Natal Press, 2000......
