Does anyone have a list of the soldiers in the Imperial Scots Guards 1st Battalion? They England left for Cape Town South Africa in October 1899. My mom's dad was a Sergeant in the 1st Battalion. I don't remember him too well; he died when I was 4 1/2 years old. He was an old guy then, born in 1871. My grandmother was his 4th wife. My mom won't discuss her father except to say that he was a Sergeant at Camp Borden Ontario during WWI. So all that I have gleaned about him is from my mom's younger brother and the Ancestry website. I don't know what my grandpa looked like when he was a younger man so that is why I'm asking about a list of the 1st Battalion soldiers. I have taken a look at the NCO's image on the Anglo Boer War front page but I don't know what to look for.

You really need a name; preferably with at least the forename initial. Once you have that it is quite possible to look up the medal rolls and perhaps even take it further.
Good luck

Mike and IL,

My grandfather's name was Henry Jerome Hassett.

I know what battles he fought in and I also have a list of the clasps and medals he wore.

But I would very much like to know what he looked like as a younger man. I tried requesting a photo of him from Ottawa when I sent away for his CEF service record but they didn't have a photo. I also have a copy of his Scots Guards service record. But again, no photo.

Thank-you for your responses. Much appreciated.

I looked him up on my 1St Bn, SG roll and I note he was awarded the SA1901 clasp for his QSA (not the Kings Medal). As you have the details of his battle clasps, - I won't go over that again. Do you have "8418 Sjt. H.J. Hassett's" medal? Even if you do not, your GF saw a great deal of action in SA. If you wish to look behind the details of the Battle Clasps he wore, I understand that this site holds a digital copy of Stirling's "Our Regiments in South Africa". That will definitely flesh-out his active service in SA.
Now, the difficult bit! Locating a pic of your GF at the time of his Boer War service will be a trial - even if it can be achieved. A collector who can marry up a pic of a soldier serving in SA to go with his medal has achieved quite a feat. I have managed it a few times; mainly just by luck. If you contact the Regimental museum, they MIGHT have a group pic of the Sgts of 1st Bn., SG, either going to or coming from SA. Whether the individuals are named is another matter.
As I said before; Good Luck and if you manage to find a pic of your GF, I am sure our Forum Members will be interested to hear of it.
IL.
