many thanks again. I do have access to some letters he wrote home whilst serving in South Africa plus some photographs. So with his diaries plus the regimental history i should have enough to write a chapter on the boer war as part of a book I have started writing.

I am unclear- as a civilian- as to the role of an adjutant during war time. I know he turned down an invitation to be an adjutant around 1907 as he thought it would divert him from getting promotion after Staff College success. I might start a new topic on this?

I have been surprised that there were so many court martials in the Worcester Regiment but maybe that was the nature of discipline at that time.

Warm regards

Mike

Are you pointing me to the account of Hovell? An interesting character in his own right. Gerald Lea was to transfer to the 2nd Worcesters so must have known him.

Thanks

Mike

Good Morning Mike.....

Yes the Hovell account especially the section from the diary of No.4399 Private Thomas Ford, 2nd Battalion, which gave a description of the battle.....

Also here is a definition of adjutant......

In the British Army, an Adjutant is usually a senior captain (sometimes a major). As the colonel's personal staff officer, he was once in charge of all the organisation, administration and discipline for a battalion or regiment.....

He would have to serve in this position for advancement, normally also 2nd in command......
