You are also very correct Meurig in regards tracking down the ancestry:

But this is exactly what the Australian Lebanese Historical Society did.
alhs.org.au/?p=344

Then the further investigation from National Archives, The State Libraries,
Trove, and of course, from the descendants themselves, completes the picture.

Here below is a list from the First World War.

Thanks Simon.

Good website by the ALHS.

From the article this is key "Many Australians look upon these
Syrians as foreigners, but they point
out that they should not be placed
under that heading. They are natu
ralised and some have been in this
country for half a century and fought
in the Boer war and last war."

Good luck with you search for the ABW veterans, hopefully the sometimes sketchy nature of attestation forms won't be a great hindrance. Sometimes, but not often, addresses to where a medal is sent are written on the medal rolls.

Simon
The only Manusu/Manusa I found in a Colonial Australian unit was "2775 L/Cpl. Alfred Aristides Manusu" 3rd Sqn., Draft for 3NSWMR. No such (or similar) surname in the South Aust. IB.
I had a quick look through my CD of sample attestation forms for Colonial Australian/Commonwealth of Australia ABW units and each of the forms asks the recruit: "Are you a British Subject?" A look at sample forms for Kitchener's Horse and the SAMIF (for example) shows the same question to be put. I can find nothing to answer the obvious question: "What if a recruit said NO".
Regards
IL.
