Putting this all together, I think the most likely man is Alexander McTavish, South African Constabulary., since if he served in the Cape Police then he would likely join the SAC. He would not be the one who died in 1882 obviously.
Then some service details would be in this file, you would have to contact someone like Audrey Portman to copy the file for you.
