One often find DTD's and/or ABO's to Boer PoW's held on St Helena.
QSA/KSA's to men who did duty there are less common, However, there must be more than a few examples in Forumites' collections and I propose a topic as such.
To start the ball rolling :



Spink was awarded the QSA with bar "Cape Colony" from a roll headed "Civilian Staff St Helena", signed on the island on 6 January 1903. The SA'02 bar was authorised on a roll headed "Attd. R.A.M.Corps", dated 29 April 1903 and signed at the War Office.
It would be interesting to know whether he attended to Boer and Brit ..

I have a QSA clasps Natal,Orange Free State and Transvaal to 4055 Pte G Barrett,Gloster Regt who served on St Helena. He had a bit of a checkered history having been taken prisoner at Nicholson Nek outside Ladysmith on 30 Oct 1899. He was released on the 5th of September 1900 and arrived on St Helena on 4 Dec 1900 and served there until 31 March 1902 when he was posted back to South Africa so is entitled to an 02 clasp as well. I always wonder if he finished up guarding any Boer prisoners who had been his guards while he was a POW.

I have one example.



First attested for the Hampshire Regiment on 23rd August 1899 when he stated his age as 18 years and 1 month. Initially he did well and was made Lance-Corporal on 5th February 1900. Unfortunately he was found to have made a mis-statement about his age having been born in April 1883 in Whitchurch in Hampshire and was reduced to Private on 26th July and discharged on the 30th November 1900. He subsequently attested for the Wiltshire Militia in March 1901 age 17 years and 11 months and was included in the 3rd Battalion who were embodied in April 1901 and served on St Helena from 20th June 1901 until 11th September 1902. His enthusiasm for military service apparently satisfied, he was discharged by purchase (£2) on 7th May 1904.

Another interesting St Helena QSA : this one to the Commandant of the Broadbottom PoW Camp.

LtCol Wright had a long military career, but had only one medal to show for it.

 

It would seem that he handled and treated the Boer PoW's courteously and with consideration : so much so that he was presented in June 1902 with a "Thank You Address" by departing Boers.
