Nice one Adrian, this man does not appear in the casualty rolls, until now.

He is Cpl 6384 Arthur Henry Ryde 4th bn Derbyshire Rgt. There are two sets of service papers on FmP which explain the number 2134 - he enlisted twice in the 4th bn, the second occassion after his first term had expired. By this time he was married and unfortunately his keenness for soldiering for cost him his life.

The date of death given on his service papers is 14th March.

Sue - could you post an image of the newspaper article? He doesn't come up in any newspaper searches.

Thanks

Thank you - sorry I missed typed date of death.
I am new to this and I am amazed at how much help I have received - thanks to all!

I have attached (hopefully) the newspaper item. I am going to try to get another copy that is more in focus but haven't got around to that yet.
From the text in the letter it seemed to read 'Queens Hospital Ship Cradock' but I now know he is buried at Cradock. Small detail in a very moving letter.
Best wishes,
Sue

Hello Sue,

Here is another reference to Arthur. It is from the SA Archives site and shows the date of death as the 13th March. It also shows the Church's name and location. Whether St Paul's Church Cemetery has now become known as Deary Avenue Municipal Cemetery I don't know, but that is certainly possible what with all the name changes etc going on in SA !!
