QSA (4) CC, OFS, Witte, SA01 (334 Tpr: L. Hunter Kitchener’s F.S.)

SA01 clasp loose on ribbon, from Medal Roll dated 19 October 1904.

Lynn Hunter, a Labourer, departed Liverpool per ship Apic on 22 .9.1900 headed for Cape Town. He joined 1 Kitchener’s Fighting Scouts at Salisbury 27.12.1900: discharged at Pretoria on 20.7.1901 on completion of service.

QSA (2) Orange Free State, Transvaal, (25609 PTE. J. BAKER KITCHENER’S F.S.)

Described as: Joseph Baker transferred from the Commander-in-Chiefs Bodyguard to 2nd Kitchener’s Fighting Scouts on 1st August 1901. He was present when the unit was attacked near the Rhenoster river on 4th October whilst marching to Heilbron, the enemy were driven off at a cost of 4 men killed and 6 wounded, Baker is recorded as being wounded in this engagement. Discharged on 11th March 1902 on completion of his service. Medal and clasps confirmed on the K.F.S. roll (he also appears on the C.i.C.B. roll but a note states medal issued off alternative roll).

Sold yesterday for a hammer price of £160.

John Clifford Vacy Lyle.

Born c 1874 in Natal, son of William Bray Lyle. William Bray established himself as a sugar merchant in Durban in 1864. 'By 1874 he [William] was managing the Kirkly Vale Sugar Estate; described by John Robinson in 1870 as ‘the last sugar plantation to the northward’ Kirkly Vale was near the Umvoti River between the coast road and the sea.' ( molegenealogy.blogspot.com/2013/04/ )

John served in the Umvoti Volunteer Corps and earned the BSACM for Rhodesia 1896.

Served in the 1st KFS 5 December 1900 to 7 July 1902.

DSO LG 31 October 1902: "J C V Lyle, Lieutenant, 1st Kitchener's Fighting Scouts. In recognition of services during the operations in South Africa".

On 15 June 1908 he married Margaret Templeton in Johannesburg.

He also took part in the Great War, and reached the rank of Lieutenant Colonel (Labour Corps) 26 June 1918. MC (22 August 1918, Norther Transvaal Ruiters) and OBE (Birthday Honours 1919).

Sub-Native Commissioner at Louis Trichardt, 1926.

He died 10 October 1962, aged 88. Described as a farmer. Resided as the Fenton Vacy Sugar Estate, Zoutpansberg.

According to one uncorroborated account 'John Vacy-Lyle, D.S.O., M.C., was a medical doctor and sugar planter who served as a founder member and Captain of the Victoria Mounted Rifles and later as Colonel in the Natal Mounted Rifles.' ( molegenealogy.blogspot.com/2013/04/ ). Part of this could relate to John Vacy Lyle who died in 1879. The Victoria Mounted Rifles were founded in September 1842.
