Thanks for your reply. Have you more information on John Campbell Heriot Maitland? My man is Heriot Maitland I discovered yesterday, when I came across a draft report by his CO (Lt Col Frederick Romilly DSO, commanding 2nd Battalion) giving his full name. However, he is certainly Ian in all his correspondence.

Not unusual. Ian is a Scottish John.
