I have just come across a copy of "A Diary of the ... Siege of Ladysmith from the first to the finish" by David Gullan Winton. I know he is listed in the NNVA records as a Gunner, but that is all I can find. Does anyone know anything more about him or the diary (of which I can find no mention whatsoever!). Thanks all!

David Gullan Winton was my husband's 2nd great uncle. He was born between Apr and June 1873 in Wooler, Northumberland. He had a twin brother George Tait Beaton Winton, who later emigrated to British Columbia, Canada. David remained in Africa following the Boer War, and nothing more is now known of his subsequent life. The family still has a copy of his book "Diary of the Siege of Ladysmith", which belonged to his brother John Thomas Winton (Jr.). We have tried to research his later life, but do not know how to access vital records of Natal (if indeed he remained there). He was the son of John Thomas Winton, Sr. and Christina Tait Beaton Winton, of Wooler. If anyone knows anything further of David, the family would appreciate knowing.

David Gullen Winton died in Natal in 1925.
He married Jessie Evelyn Gorton, she died in Natal in 1963.

Two more questions, sorry.....do you know what cemetery they are buried in, and where David and Jessie Winton lived in Natal?

One more....are there any censuses of Natal available online?
