thank you for that :-)
He came home earlier than his brother, in June of 1900, his brother remaining in SA until September of 1902.

NFF casualty list ( partial cut shown) for the 1st Leicesters shows "missing, released" for ten ORs; plus two officers, Capt. B. De Weldon (wounded) and Lt . W.M.P. Hannah (killed in action) at Dundee.
A cross check with our Host's book "Talana, Account and Medal roll" for each may show more detail. Looks like the MI suggestion is correct.

Following on .........
Some of the 1st Leicesters were certainly doing something else than simply guarding the stores in the camp at the time of the Talana battle. Palmer tells us that Lt. Hannah was killed by a Boer shell falling in the camp and Captain B de W Weldon was wounded (djb's book says "in the hand".). The latter's location not stated.
Of the ten ORs mentioned in NFF, our host's book shows "not clear about how or when he was captured" in the cases of Hawley, Elliott, Foss, Lawrence and Jackson. In the case of Pte Kendall, djb states that , in addition to "not clear about how or when he was captured", he adds "perhaps released on parole to be in Ladysmith in 2/00 and did not receive the DofL clasp".
The above aspect gets away from the initial purpose of the enquiry; however, it does indicate that there was a number of the 1st Leicesters sufficiently actively involved in the Talana battle to suffer casualties/become captive.

thank you all so much for this :-)

I did try to do a little digging, am still very much a beginner for this war...

a local paper lists the men missing:

have managed to find a few service records which all state the same as Foss
'missing after battle of Dundee period 20th to 26th October'
the only one different is Metcalfe who's states
'prisoner of war Pretoria ..... 99'
and an article stating he was captured on the 23rd October.

I did find a couple of cuttings that stated Lt Hanner was in the Leicesters Mounted Infantry at the battle of Dundee
and that Elliot was in the mounted infantry although the report is around a year later.

I'll keep digging and see what I can find... just wondering if they were may be part of the mounted company doing something or other ...

once again thank you all and apologies for any stupid questions or misinterpretations.
