I concur with the recommendation for Thomas Pakenhams book.
Also worth a read from the colonial perspective is Australia's Boer War by Craig Wilcox.
Enjoy!

Over the years I have amassed a large library of Anglo Boer War related books. Many of these I havent read to the end as the authors haven't really entertained me , and frankly reading should be entertainment as well as instruction. One book that I can really recommend is "Battles of the Boer War "by W Baring Pemberton. He had me from the opening paragraph.
My copy was aquired second hand and is inscribed , "To my Darling Poochie, Many happy returns dor today, All my love , Barbie "10.6.1968. Well done Barbie , I'm sure that Poochie enjoyed it as much as I did !
