Findmypast shows in the 1891 Census that Joseph Compton (born Kinnersley, Herefordshire) was a 56 year old masterbuilder and Frances Alice (born Surrey) his wife aged 46. They lived at Prot House, 17 Union Street, Worcester. This part of the city was known as Blockhouse, a bustling area of back to back housing, public houses and shops. Long since demolished.
Also recorded was a son John Compton a 12 year old scholar. His name does not appear on the 1881 Census when a niece named Kate Wildig aged 4 lived with the Comptons. Could this be our John Smith Wildig having previously taken the surname of his aunt and uncle? His age would have been 22 in 1901, so that would fit.
The Census of 1901 gives the address of Joseph and Frances as number 11 College Precincts, perhaps they had moved from number 8. The family were prolific housemovers living at a different address with each Census.
I would like to think that John had a very good upbringing with the Comptons as they were a family with reasonable means. As from 1881 they employed a Domestic/General Servant.
They would have felt John's loss keenly.
