My great grandfather, Henry George Dixon (DOB 1858 - Lancashire UK) left London for South Africa around about 1900, he left behind a wife and 6 children. I am trying to find out what happened to him in SA. Very knid people have found records that suggest he was an orderly in the Boer War. I would really like to find out what happened to him as he never returned to his family. Is there anyway of me finding out what happened to men who enlisted to go to SA and information about their service and discharge. Is it probable that he signed up in the UK? Thank you in advance for any help.

Hi Chrisandellie,
I have just taken a quick look at "In Memoriam" by Steve Watt, which lists the fatalities of the Anglo Boer War. I can find no matching name nor anyone with the surname of Dixon who served and died while with the IHC. So, at least a start. You know that he did not die during the conflict.
I am sure that another resourceful forummer will turn up more info on your Great Grandfather.
Cheers Steve.

Hello Chrisandellie.

Is it possible you have any additional details on Henry's profession before he joined the Imperial Hospital Yeomanry? Also any info you may have about his family and places he may have lived before he disappeared.
I have enclosed the entry from the nominal roll for the I H Y.
Your G Grandfather served from 21st July 1900 and was discharged on the 8th February 1901. Also there are 2 medal roll sheets for him , alas the Natal clasp has been erased but his 1901 clasp entitlement is visible. No additional notes on the rolls to help I'm afraid. Although there is a remark pertaining to 1907 which may refer to his medal being returned, but I'm not sure if that's the case. May need clarification from the forum on my assumption.
If you have any more clues you could share? It may help to find out where he went after his time as an orderly during the Boer war.

Regards

Dave.....

Henry's nominal roll entry.

That's amazing thank you.
Henry George Dixon was born in 1858, he married Elizabeth Lomax in Lancashire 10/7/1881. He lived in London from about 1892 with his wife Elizabeth Hannah Dixon (Lomax). They had 7 children, the youngest, Winifred was born a couple of months before he enlisted for the Boer War.
In the 1891 census he is living in London and working as a labourer.
One of my Aunts thought he went to Mozambique from South Africa but an Uncle believes he came back to England at some point.
In the 1940's or 50's the family were shown an announcement in a newspaper - a solicitor looking for Henry and William Dixon (Henry George's 2 sons) the family didn't respond to the advert as they thought Henry George might have been in debt ----it could have been the opposite of course.
Thank you again for your assistance.
