Hi
I am trying to establish whether my granddad fought in the Boer War (or was this from WWI). I've attached a photo of him in uniform so I'm hoping someone recognizes the unit information. His names was Alex Lithgow. He was born in 1878 in Falkirk, Scotland but came to South Africa in the early 1900s. He married in Roodepoort in 1909. He was my maternal grandfather and married a Slabbert (her family spent time in the Howick concentration camp.)

This looks like WWII to me. He looks very young to have been born in 1879. I think you have the wrong chap

I really would agree with Rory and say WW2, based on the apparent age of the gentleman, the quality of the image and perhaps more significant is the cut of the uniform.

Thank you!
You are absolutely correct.
I provided my Great-grandfather's details (also an Alex-ander)). My grandfather was born in 1911 in South Africa. So WW2 ... any ideas on what the pips are?

Absolutely correct - I confused my Great-grandfather and Grandfather. Any idea of rank or unit? I know that brass is not that clear but hoping anyhow.

He is the rank of Captain, and the badges I have seen used as a General Service badge.....
